Université de Montréal is a public research university whose official inauguration took place on January 6, 1878, initially as a branch of Université Laval before becoming an autonomous francophone institution. Its main campus on Mount Royal at 2900 Boulevard Édouard-Montpetit is one of the largest French-language universities in the world.

The university offers undergraduate and graduate study primarily in French across more than a dozen faculties, including arts and science, medicine, law, education, music, veterinary medicine and environmental design. It is a major centre for research in health, artificial intelligence, social sciences and the humanities in Quebec.
