The University of Adelaide was formally established on 6 November 1874 by an Act of the South Australian Parliament, making it one of Australia's oldest universities. Its historic North Terrace campus in Adelaide's central business district features landmark sandstone buildings including the Mitchell Building.
The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across arts, business, engineering, computer and mathematical sciences, health and medical sciences, law, sciences and allied health. In January 2026 it merged with the University of South Australia to form Adelaide University, which now operates through adelaide.edu.au while retaining the North Terrace campus.
